Remote Surveillance Systems

By taking advantage of existing and emerging network, wireless, and software technologies, many companies in the marketplace now offer various remote surveillance systems (RSS) for a variety of applications. In evaluating these various technologies and applications, JJENCO has identified two applications of principal interest to our clients; remote security monitoring and remote surveillance. Each of these issues requires a slightly different technical approach for maximum success.

RSS for Security Monitoring (RSS/SM)
Increased concern over common criminal activities, as well as the new threat of domestic terrorism, has similarly increased the needs of individuals, companies, and law enforcement for technologies that provide better situational awareness of real-time events. A key requirement has emerged for access to real-time security surveillance of remote locations, and particularly when a potential security threat may be in progress. In response to this requirement, JJENCO offers an Internet-based remote surveillance system capable of 24/7 automated video monitoring of remote locations, automated recognition of potential security events, and alerting a designated first-responder to the event by means of alarm transmittal via email, telephone, or pager.

In addition to automatically alerting on potential security breeches, the RSS/SM technology also enables first-responders to log into the actual camera generating the security alert - using an ID and password - from any Internet-connected computer to view events at the remote location in real-time. Users of many new generation 'smart' cellphones can similarly access cameras for which they have been granted access rights by the system owner. Finally, the RSS/SM technology documents all 'events' by means of generating an MPEG-4 audio-video file of the event, which is time-stamped and saved to the server and/or emailed to a designated recipient.

Using this system, owners of monitored assets can have increased confidence that any attempted breech of a monitored location will result in their immediate notification, enabling them to immediately view and evaluate the situation resulting in the alarm and determine what type of response may be warranted. Similarly, the technology provides law enforcement with a better understanding of unfolding event, enabling them to not only respond more quickly, but also with the appropriate assets. As an added law enforcement benefit, 'false alarms' are virtually eliminated, thereby increasing the overall efficiency of available resources.

RSS for General Surveillance (RSS/GS)
In everyday life, networked surveillance technologies are providing new opportunities to increase safety, efficiency or effectiveness, both at home and at work. RSS/GS technology, in moving from the military, law enforcement and security arenas, is finding broad application for general surveillance activities. Examples include:

  • Parents and Schools. Monitoring children's activities from a remote location to ensure their safety or adherence to proscribed activities.
  • Homeowners. Monitoring residences, pets, remote vacation homes, storage units, boats, airplanes, and other personal assets that may be stored at remote locations.
  • Farmers and Ranchers. Monitoring crops, livestock, out-buildings, general operations, and equipment.
  • Retail Operations. Monitoring multiple store locations, point-of-sale registers, expensive merchandise, loading docks, parking lots, store entrances.
  • Industrial Plants. Monitoring process operations, maintenance activities, hazardous or generally inaccessible locations, key locations, remote supporting equipment.
  • Municipal Applications. Park and recreational areas, landmarks, major traffic intersections, streets, and highways, transportation centers (airports, metro stations, bus depots, etc).

Where only general surveillance is required, and automated monitoring and event notification is unnecessary, JJENCO offers other simplified technology RSS/GS solutions specifically suited to that purpose. As with our RSS/SM technology, our RSS/GS technology enables users with appropriate access rights to access a specific camera from any Internet-connected computer or smart cellphone and view monitored scenes in real time. Likewise, monitored video can be recorded to disk for post-processing or archival purposes.

System Design
Unlike other surveillance technology vendors who favor applying their own product to many different applications, JJENCO considers a variety of available technologies from the marketplace in order to design each RSS configuration that best meets a specific customer need. We are then prepared to work with each customer to the extent required in order to successfully install and set-up each RSS package.

To discuss how either of our RSS packages might be applied to best address your surveillance need, please contact JJENCO to discuss.
